Image result for pope francis1. Pope Francis lives a very interesting life. He is not just a religious person that preaches about the Bible. Jorge Mario Bergoglio(Pope Francis) is like any other human. He went to school, had relationships, and was very social. Bergoglio then heard a call from God for him to become a priest and help spread the word of God. Bergoglio was a very well-known man in the area he lived in. He would just walk around the streets and talk to people about their lives. He interacted with people and made their days. Bergoglio then became Pope. Many were happy to see him become the Pope, but sad that they had to share him with the world. He was not a desk Pope, but a Pope who wanted to be seen as any other human and he wanted to care for his people. This struck me most because this is a Pope who often went to towns and talk and care for citizens.

Image result for writings2. The topics about Pope Francis' writings are about caring and creating a healthy environment. In Lumen Fidei, Francis is focusing on how our faith in God can lead us to happiness(light). Even if some people do not believe in the same religion, they can be lead to happiness simply by being kind and choosing to do right. His second writing is Evangelii Gaudium. This writing focuses on how a community can bring joy. Pope Francis does not want to leave anyone out and make sure his message spreads. Vultum Dei Quaerere explains the importance in life and how women impact the world so much. He is explaining that women are important and make a big difference in the world and no one should be in their way. His writing about Joy is Amoris Laetitia. His focus is on family time and spending time with others. Misericordia et Misera is a writing about Peace and Mercy. Pope Francis encourages everyone to create a peaceful enviornment. Lastly, his most famous writing is Laudato Si and it talks about the enviornment. It is about taking care for our environment. All of St. Francis' writings focuses on respecting and caring for people, animals, women, and the environment.

Image result for take action3. Pope Francis is a pope that talks about change and then takes action to make change. Pope Francis is changing how we treat our elders. He is also changing our views on how we see each other. Pope Francis is also changing the roles of Popes. Instead of sitting at a desk all day and giving speeches, he is taking his time to give inspirational speeches and talk face-to-face to people who are really in need. He regularly goes to towns and just talks to people about their lives. He is taking actions instead of talking about how he can change our world. Pope Francis also changing perspectives on each other. He states that each one of us are different and we should not judge our differences. Pope Francis is instead celebrates differences than sees it negatively.

Image result for acceptance4. Some hopes I have for the present day Catholic Church are for them to accept differences and to take action instead of talking about action. I learned that each one of us are created equally. I believe that women can be more active in the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is a male dominant environment, I think that women should be a little bit more involved. I also think that the Church should not always have negative views on differences. They should instead celebrate our differences. I also think that the Catholic Church should celebrate God in more creative ways to engage younger audiences. Many more younger people will be more engaged and take in more from what the Catholic Church preaches.

Blog Post #12: Notre Dame Community
By: Jubilee

What did you find interesting about the history of the Sisters of Notre Dame?
Image result for sunflower
The Sisters of Notre Dame has a very interesting history. The one thing that stuck out was how they used to teach at Notre Dame and their roles as sisters. The Sisters of Notre Dame played a huge part in the Notre Dame Community. It is amazing to know that Sisters taught students and organized all events. The Sisters of Notre Dame came a long way to help start give education for girls. They were strong independent women that sacrificed a lot to give time to God and what they believe.

What is something that you heard from the Alumnae Panel that stuck with you and why?
Image result for notre dame belmontSomething that I heard from the Alumnae Panel that stuck with me was how it was easy for them to interact and socialize with other students from schools, like Serra. It surprised me how relationships were when they went to school. After a couple broke up, it was fine for other people to date them. Today, after two people break up, there is so much jealously when someone talks to them and are considered "their property." Social media did not affect students before because they were forced to talk and interact with others.

What does it mean to you to be a part of the Notre Dame Community?
Image result for coming togetherBeing part of the Notre Dame Community means so much to me. I get to celebrate the wonderful St. Julie and come together with my fellow NDB sisters/ND community. Everyone part of the community join and welcome others to our community. The Notre Dame Community is not just in one location. It is spread across the world, but the main communities nearby is Notre Dame Community in Belmont and San Jose. People come together to celebrate St. Julie's feast day. This is very important to members of the ND Community.

When you leave Notre Dame High School, what do you think are some values that will stay with you?
Image result for notre dame belmont
When I leave Notre Dame Belmont High School, some very useful values that will stay with me are to be confident, open up more to other people, do not stress and have a unhealthy lifestyle, and to prioritize. At NDB, I can take on leadership roles and be able to comfortably speak in front of people. This year, I held a leadership position. This roles allows me to take on more responsibilities and lead my class through the year. Being Homeroom President, allows me to practice speaking in front of people comfortably. I have learned to open up to new people. When I was a Freshman, I had to meet new people and open up to them. Living a healthy lifestyle is very important. I can do this by not stressing out and prioritizing all my academic work, sports, and extracurricular activities. All of these values will stick to me after I leave NDHSB.

Blog Post Questions: Growth
By Jubilee

  1. Which event that you learned about from the Church History textbook presentations did you find most interesting and why?
The event I found most interesting was the publication of the "95 Theses." During the time, indulgences were used to convince people that they can “buy their way to heaven.” I found this event very interesting because Martin Luther went against the authoritative Catholic Church. This was a very bold and brave decision because there could have been serious consequences against Luther's actions. After he posted the "95 Theses" on the cathedral door, Luther's ideas became very popular. It was interesting to learn that one person risked their life to change how the Catholic Church ran. A piece of paper with a person's thoughts changed the perspectives of many people.

  1. Which person whom you learned about from the Church History textbook presentations did you find most interesting and why?
Image result for st perpetua and st felicityAfter the Church History textbook presentations, I found the story about St. Perpetua and St. Felicity the most interesting. These two women demonstrated strength and courage of martyrs and women. At Notre Dame, students are taught to become strong and independent women that will one day impact the world. St. Perpetua and St. Felicity were told to wear non-Christian robes, but refused to because it would go against their religion. I found their strength in their faith very inspiring and fascinating. They believed that God will guide them through their execution in the arena. St. Perpetua also had a child before she was sent into the arena. She had a choice to listen to the authorities and obey their religion, but instead of accepting the new religion and being able to take care of her child, Perpetua stayed strong with her faith and gave up her child. She left her child with a Christian women. When they were sent to the arena, St. Perpetua and St. Felicity were commanded to dress into non-Christian clothes. They refused and died as faithful martyrs. These two women are major religious people in the Catholic Church.

  1. If you end up being known as an influential figure in history, what do you want to be remembered for?
Image result for helping the earth
If I ended up being known as an influential figure in history, I would want to be remembered as a person who contributed to my community and influenced other lives to do so too. I'd want people to actively participate and give back to their community. Catholic or not, everyone should participate and help our environment. I do not just want to be known as the person who volunteered each week, but as a role model and inspiration to improve our world and create peace between each other. The little actions like sharing a smile or picking up trash on the ground could make a huge impact. I also want people to know that we can always improve our surroundings and interaction with each other. It will not get better by itself and we need to start making choices to make sure future generations experiences what we experience.

'
  1. How have you personally experienced growth (either mentally, emotionally or spiritually) after your own challenges in life?
Image result for growing mentallyI have personally experienced mental and emotional growth after my challenges in life. Challenges I faced are people in my family passing away. Theses challenges are very hard to face, but I learned that family and being with each other will help each other to get through the painful moment. When three of my family members died last year, three new family members came into the world. I experienced emotional and mental growth here because when there were tragic events, joyous events followed it after. I learned to stay strong through the bad times and family will help me get through painful moments.

Blog Response 10: Marian Apparitions and Resilience
By: JWilson19

  1. What were some new things that you learned from the Marian Apparition projects (be specific)?
  2. How did you see resilience at work within the Marian apparition that you researched?
  3. Mary went through many challenges throughout her life, and managed to stay strong and never waver in her faith. In this way she showed resilience. Do you see yourself as being resilient? Why or why not?

Image result for simple mary drawingIn general, I learned so much from listening to my classmates' short stories about their Marian Apparition. I learned that Mary appeared to so many important religious people we have learned about for and for different reasons. The main Marian apparitions my class and I learned about are Our Lady of Atika, Our Lady of Faitma, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Knock, and Our Lady of Lourdes. Each one apparition is Mary, but in different forms. The one I found most interesting was Our Lady of Lourdes. This story is my favorite because I have been learning about her and St. Bernadette since I was little. Our Lady of Lourdes appeared to a young girl named Bernadette and Bernadette would obey and listen to all of Mary's commands/requests. Bernadette is also my Confirmation name, so she has been my favorite saint. Mary appeared to many to spread her faith and so the people started to preach more and spread their faith. She continued her work after her death. The people she talked to and Mary herself demonstrated strength and faith.
Image result for our lady of lourdes

During this project, we learned that the people Mary was communicating to went through difficult times. People were claiming that they were telling a lie and no should believe her. St. Bernadette went to the local priest to say that Mary wanted a chapel to be built, but he did not believe her. Bernadette did not stop believing and was able to get back up and still preach. She did not let the disbelievers get in her way. Mary also helped them when they were going through this. She performed miracles so people who see that they have strong faith. When she dug up soil from the ground water started spreading everywhere. It later became a spring and people go there and are healed from their disease and sickness.

Image result for resilienceMary has been through so much through her life. Seeing her son die was the most hard thing to see. A mother would never want their child suffer, but somehow she stayed strong. Mary showed resilience when this happened. She managed to stay strong with her faith and doubt her belief. She knew that Jesus was destined from this and she will one day be with him again. I believe I show resilience at times, but it is very difficult. I am able to get back up when something bad happens, but sometimes I get very discouraged. I am sometimes not resilient when there is a death in my family. It is hard to believe that they were taken away, but I believe that are happy in heaven with God and other people I love.

Blog Response 9

In what ways did the people you learned about during this unit suffer? What was their reaction to their suffering? Which story from the Acts of the Apostles did you find most inspiring and why? How have they experienced challenges in your own life and how have you dealt with them? Who are people that you can turn to in times of need and why?
By: JWilson19

Image result for sufferingIn what ways did the people you learned about during this unit suffer? What was their reaction to their suffering?:
In this unit, we learned about people suffering in different ways. Many people were arrested, killed, abused, and went through so much to preach about God or to have a religious experience. Paul was a major character in most of the presentations. He was abused, sent to jail, and was constantly being put down for his beliefs, but he did not give up. He continued to preach about God's word and go against people who did not believe him. Paul could have easily given up and left the towns, but he wanted to make a difference and continue God’s work. Paul expected this reaction from the towns because it was against the rule to preach. In Act 28, many started to warm up to him and accept him. Paul spoke at gatherings and welcomed many into his home. Paul and other men were scared and terrified when they were suffering during their lives.

Which story from the Acts of the Apostles did you find most inspiring and why?:
The Acts of the Apostle story that I found most inspiring was Act 18: 1-16. Paul dedicated his life to spreading the word of God. He traveled from Athens to Corinth He was discouraged by many of the people, but was still devoted to his mission. The Lord visited Paul in a vision and kept on encouraging him not to give up. God gave him hope, supported him, and helped him get through his hard time. Paul stayed in Corinth and was dedicated to still preach. The Jews brought him to Galileo because they thought Paul deserved to be persecuted and die for his actions. Galileo did not see anything wrong and let Paul go. This is an inspiring passage because Paul did not give up and committed himself to God. God helped him persevere through his life obstacle: lacking the belief and support from the people around him. At the end of Act 28: 17-30, people started to welcome him into their lives.

How have they experienced challenges in your own life and how have you dealt with them? Who are people that you can turn to in times of need and why?:
Challenges that I experienced in my life are friend drama, school drama, and people I do not get along with. These challenges sometimes distract me and discourage me from my top priorities. Before, I had a hard time adjusting to high school and my new Varsity Soccer team. I learned to be open to new friends and be more comfortable around them. For soccer, my team and I had a lot of team bonding activities to be more closer. I overcame them by talking to someone about it, relaxing, and by doing things I like to do. When I am feeling that I can't deal with something by myself, I go to my family. I usually talk to them about all my daily school drama and they usually listen and respond or give me advice on how to deal with the problem. This helps so much because they are my support and help me go through my day. It feels good being able to talk to someone.

Discipleship: What did you learn about the original disciples from the group projects? Which disciple did you find most interesting and why? Based on what you learned, what are the characteristics of people who follow Christ and do you feel that you display any of these characteristics? Why or why not?

By: JWilson19

Image result for twelve disciplesAfter watching and listening to the group projects, I learned so much about the disciples. The disciples that were presented in class were Philip, Bartholomew, Matthias, Andrew, Matthew, Simon, John, Jude, Peter, James the Greater, and Judas. I learned that all the disciples were normal citizens until Jesus came into their lives and He helped guide them to help others and spread the word of God. Philip was the brother of Peter and Andrew. He was with Jesus when he feed 5,000 people. He actively participated in disciple discussions with Jesus and obeyed Jesus when he told him to go with him. Bartholomew was introduced to Jesus by Philip. He performed many miracles throughout his life and converted pagans from India to Christians. He is also notable for translating the Gospel of Matthew. Matthias was Judas' replacement. He was a caregiver and helped many avoid temptation. He lived a healthy life and later stoned to death. Andrew was very close to Jesus. Before becoming a disciple, he was a fisherman with his brother, Peter, and his father. He is most notable for proclaiming the Gospel. Matthew was an apostle of Jesus and one of the four Evangelists. He was a tax collector and it was odd for a Jew to collaborate with a Roman occupation force. His name was Levi before receiving the name Matthew. He wrote the Gospel of Matthew and wrote about Jesus' message and news to His people. Simon was 28 years old before becoming an apostle. He was a merchant before becoming an apostle. He inspired others and preached "Peace on Earth and goodwill among men." John is well-known in the Bible and is mentioned 131 times. He is also an Evangelist like Matthew. He was a fisherman with his father before becoming a disciple and was a very close friend of Jesus. He also wrote three letters in the new testament. Jude  is the author of Jude in the New Testament and is a mysterious apostle. He is seen with a flame on his head with an image of Jesus and he holds a book/paper and axe. Peter is a disciple that was notable for guiding people toward Jesus through fishing. He spoke to many people about Jesus in Jerusalem and then encouraged 3,000 people to get baptized. James the Greater was also a fisher with his father. He was in a famous story when they caught plenty of fish. When he went fishing, their nets were empty, but when Jesus told him to go out again and check the nets, there were many fish. He was later chosen to see Jesus' Transfiguration. Judas was the disciple that betrayed Jesus and help with his crucifixion. He sold Jesus out for money and later regret his decision. He felt so guilty, he hung himself and died.

Out of all the disciples, I saw that Judas' life was interesting because he was chosen by Jesus and later turned his back from him. I found this interesting because Jesus knew Judas was going to betray him in the future, but did not do anything because it was God's  plan. Jesus had a lot of courage because he spent so much time with Judas and knew the whole time he was going to turn him over and kill him. Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss the help indicate that that was Jesus and the one that they wanted. He was so guilty of turning in Jesus, he killed himself.
Image result for judas kiss jesus

Image result for characteristics of a follower of jesusBased on what I know, characteristics that a follower of Jesus posses are loyalty, commitment, and faithful. The one disciple that did not have these characteristics was Judas because he disobeyed Jesus and he was not committed to help others. He sold Jesus to the soldiers and betrayed him with a kiss. Jesus' other disciples were always loyal to Jesus and His people. They demonstrated loyalty by always accepting a task from Jesus and they did not turn away from Him or God when they were scared. They wanted to commit their lives to live out their faith and help others do the same. They were with Jesus through the good times and bad. The followers of Jesus were always faithful and were constantly praying and doing God's work. They believed that God would help them and support them. I think that I have these qualities because I am an Active Christian and I am always trying to improve my relationship with God and people around me. I attend Sunday masses and I participate in school liturgies.
